In development — built slowly, on purpose

Be there, even when you can't.

A Moment is a message from someone you love, delivered when you need it most. Make one today; it lands in their inbox on the day it matters.

Someday, "I made you a Moment" won't need an explanation.

"You're going to walk in there like you own the place. You always have."

A Moment for Emma
her first day at the new job
Delivered
Made today · no app, no account, just their inbox

This exists for every kind of away — a deployment measured in months, a hospital room, a long-haul route, a ship with no signal, the work trip that lands on the wrong day. And the hardest kind: knowing you won't be there.

It exists just as much for the easy kinds — birthdays, first days, big games, ordinary Tuesdays. You choose the tone. Away Today protects it.

How it will work

Make it today. It arrives when it matters.

Four ways to be there — whichever feels most like you.

Away Today isn’t open yet.

Every screen below is a working preview of the product we’re building. Nothing here is live, and nothing you type is saved. Click through the whole journey: choose someone, make a Moment, schedule it, and see what arrives.

In the real product, creating your account comes first — protecting a Moment comes before making one. The preview skips ahead to the good part.

What we promise

The rules we're building under — written down before the first line of code.

Most companies write their values after the product. We wrote ours first, and we're building to them:

What you create is kept. Payment will only ever gate creating new Moments — never the keeping, the delivery, or the export of Moments you've already made.

What you schedule is delivered. A scheduled Moment is a promise, and we treat it like one.

What's yours is exportable. Downloading your own Moments will always be free.

Moments never expire. No countdown clocks, no use-it-or-lose-it. Ever.

No advertising. No selling data. Your Moments and your information are not a product. This is constitution, not policy.

"Delivered" is the only report. We'll confirm a Moment was handed over — and nothing else. What happens in someone's heart when they open it belongs to them.

Recipients stay in control. Anyone can decline and remove what's addressed to them, no account required, no questions asked.

One more rule governs this page itself: we publish only what we honor. Away Today is in development — so everything above is written as what it is: the constitution this company is being built to, not a claim about a service that exists yet. As each promise becomes operational fact, this page will say so plainly. And one thing a Moment will never claim to be: a will, a directive, or a legal instrument. Moments carry love, not law.

From the founder

Why Away Today exists

I woke up one morning with three thoughts, arriving one after another.

The first was my father. Before cancer took him, he sat holding my infant son while I filmed him leaving a message — words meant for a future he knew he wouldn't see, for a boy who wouldn't get to know him any other way. It is the most valuable recording my family owns.

The second was my sister. Her birthday was coming — and when it arrived, I'd be on a ship with no signal. No way to call, and nothing I sent would reach her in time. That's exactly how it went: her birthday came, and I was at sea.

The third was a book I'd been reading — a father searching for the words to tell his wife and daughter about a deployment he didn't know if he'd come home from.

Three different kinds of away. The same need underneath: to be there, even when you can't.

I spent more than twenty-five years in social work and family case management, sitting with families on the hardest days of their lives. I know what a message arriving at the right moment can do. Away Today is being built slowly and carefully because of what it will carry — and because I wanted to give other families the same gift I was able to give mine.

Honest questions

The things people actually asked us.

Before building anything, we asked people about the times they couldn't be there. Their hardest questions became this list — answered the way we'd answer across a table.

The most common question we got, and the fairest. Our honest answer: no young company can promise its own immortality — so we're building for the opposite assumption. The company's legal structure is being written so that the money to store, deliver, and return your Moments is set aside from every purchase, and so that if Away Today ever winds down, delivering and returning your Moments is the first obligation, not the forgotten one. The full continuity plan will be published here before we accept anyone's first Moment.

No. Never. No expiration dates, no countdown pressure, no use-it-or-lose-it. A Moment you create is yours until you say otherwise.

Nothing happens to what you've already made. Payment will only ever gate creating new Moments. Everything you've created stays kept, everything you've scheduled stays scheduled, and exporting your own Moments stays free. Non-payment will never be a reason to delete someone's message to a person they love.

You, and the person you address them to. We're building to a rule we call zero curiosity: no one at Away Today looks at Moments because they can. Your recordings will never be used for advertising, sold, licensed, or shown to anyone you didn't choose.

No. Moments arrive by email — the inbox your mother, your grandfather, or your kid's other parent already has. No downloads, no sign-ups, no technical skill required. And email crosses borders: overseas and out-of-state loved ones are exactly who this is for.

A video, a voice recording, a written message, or a photo with a note — whichever feels most like you. The whole emotional range is welcome: birthday jokes, pep talks, comfort for hard days, and ordinary Tuesdays. You choose the tone. We just protect it.

Simple and honest — priced so a message to someone you love isn't a luxury, published plainly before launch, with no subscriptions required to keep what you've made. (We're finishing this carefully, with the help of the people we've been listening to.)

You can decline and remove anything addressed to you — no account needed, no explanation owed, and the sender isn't notified. Being on the receiving end should never feel like something done to you.

To the twelve people who answered hard questions first — about the times you couldn't be there, the things you've kept, and what it would take to trust anyone with something this personal: this page is largely written in your words. Thank you. You'll be among the first invited in.
